Meditative Sounds is a roots reggae soundsystem based in Uppsala, Sweden. The music The style of the music has always been, is, and will always be roots & culture. Selection stretching from the sounds of the 70´s to the modern roots of today. From JA to UK. Strictly music with a conscious and positive message, no gunlyrics or slackness. The attendees of a Meditative Sounds dance can expect to hear tunes they havent heard elsewhere, something more than their everyday home listening. The focus is on original dubplates(unreleased tunes) rather than recuts of hits. Sometimes the lyrics involve the name of the soundsystem(Meditative Sounds) but that is not a necessity (the musical quality and exclusivity of the music is far more important). History Early 1998, founders and selectors Jesper and Andreas started playing at clubs under the name Meditative Sounds. At this time, no one was playing roots music in the Swedish dancehalls. The first dance was a huge success and fuelled the interest in playing sound system. Later the same year, singer Ras Peter joined in. Peter had been involved in different music collaborations ever since he was a kid. As time passed, different sound equipment as effects and echo units were purchased, with the determination of finally having a complete soundsystem. In 1999, friend and session attendee Johan, joined the crew and in 2001 enough money had been saved to buy speaker boxes and amplifiers. A particular model of bass boxes, speaker elements and amplifiers were bought in England and shipped over to Sweden. Then boxes for top and mid sections were being handmade at home. On the 6th of April 2001, the crowd at Crossroads- Uppsala danced to the heavy bassline from the new built soundsystem. At that time, Bredda Daniel joined the crew. He stayed for four years and then moved down south. Daniel can still be heard on the set whenever opportunity is given. Present In 2001, Meditative Sounds met with Culture Freeman in London and invited him to Sweden for a few sessions. That was the starting point for a series of successful sessions with invited guest singers. Along the years, a number of singers and MC´s has passed through the sound; established names on the international roots scene as I-Natural, Ras Iyah, Afrikan Simba, Murray Man, Dezzi D, U-Brown, Errol Bellot, Kenny Knots, Brother Culture and Earl Sixteen. Not only singers but also soundsystems have visited for different cooperations, namely Disciples & Jonah Dan (UK), RDK HiFi (UK), Cool Runnings (FIN), Grounation (NOR) and Bush Chemists (UK). Allthough still based in Uppsala and playing mostly there, Meditative Sounds has travelled all over the country and had well received shows in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmoe and Lund. Not only Sweden but also in Norway(Oslo, Bergen) and Finland(Helsinki). In between the sound sessions, Meditative Sounds hosts different radio stations - both internet and traditional radio. Always promoting roots music. Studio and label Meditative Sounds has always felt an urge to give the crowd an exclusive musical experience. The first steps was to get unreleased tunes from different producers and occasionally record specials(vocal with the artist involving the soundsystems name in the lyrics). Taking it one step further, the natural progression was to start producing their own music. In 2001 Johan bought the first pieces of equipment that laid the foundation in Meditative Recording Studio. Tunes were being made as instrumentals for strictly soundsystem play. More equipment were purchased and the productions were steadily improving. As artists passed by the studio, vocals were recorded and played on the sound. In 2005, the time had come for the first release and the launch of the Meditative Sounds record label. It resulted in a 10" vinyl single with two vocals recorded the previous year. Boxes have been rebuilt several times and now every box is self-made.
