One for the soundsystem massive. Heavy and rough!! Cronicle - Rasta unite (Dubwise 12") Excellent tune on a crisp as always rhythm from the Dubwise crew. Cronicle sounds very much like a mix of Barrington Levy and Danny Red, what more can I tell you. Go and buy! Jah Mali - Miles in the sky (Penthouse 7") Jah Mali is second to few in terms of singing. Beatiful tune. Beware of poor pressing though. Jah Manya - Annointed one (Scoops 10") JA styled singjay Jah Manya tears my apartment down with this massive tune. Rhythm section courtesy of Vibronics with horns that makes you shiver. KILLER!!! Love Grocer & Bush Chemists - East of Jaro (Conscious Sounds 10") Great instrumental from the Conscious Sounds studio, previously played as dubplate by the Meditative Sounds. Mighty horns section. November Lymie Murray - Got to be tough (Digital B 7") Bobby Digital surely is one of Jamaicas top producers. This time he has done an update of the classic Studio One rhythm 'Unchained' (retitled 'Clockwise'). Although it doesnt reach the heights of Bob Andys original, its still very good. The Lymie Murray cut caught my interest first, followed by Sanchez and Chezidek. Eddie Fitzroy - Run come come (Zion High 7") This rhythm is one of the best I have heard in quite a while. It fits great with Eddie Fitzroy´s odd style of singing. Also a great combination cut with Yami Bolo/Capleton. Top quality!!! . George Nooks - Tragedy (5th element) Dennis Brown styled singer George Nooks deliver a fine vocal on this one drop. Several other cuts available. Murray Man - Stop the war (Mellow Vibes 7") Murray Man comments the current situation in the world on a crucial one drop. Deliver the message... Barrington Levy - Teach me culture (Live and learn LP) This crucial Barrington LP from 1983 was this months revival selection. October Dub Judah - Better to be good (Dub jockey LP) Got to hail up one of reggae´s best lyricsists - Dub Judah. I have owned this LP since the 90´s and are still listening to it frequently. Great production, great lyrics, great vocals. You need to have this LP, trust me. Twinkle Brothers - Dub pack, old cuts (Twinkle LP) Massive dub set featuring dubs to classics such as 'Since I threw the comb away', 'Rasta pon top' and 'Never get burn'. Mixed by Gussie P at A-Class studio(London). White Mice - True love (IntelitecLP) White Mice first album, recorded at an age of 16 years. Featuring sound killers 'try a thing', 'its a shame' and 'good music'. Bob Marley - Rainbow country (Upsetter 10") Great Marley tune produced by Lee Perry. Also a superior cut to Natural Mystic on the flip. Came on repress a year or so back. Live Wyya - War gainst lucifer (All access 7") Great slice of modern JA roots. Came half a year ago or something like that. Played it on the sound a few times. September Anatalee - Stop fight (Ancient mystic 7") Never heard this female singer before. Really good tune. Jimmy Riley - Nyah Bingi (Trojan Rastafari Box set) Many good tracks on this box set. This one by Jimmy Riley is one of my favourites. Gentleman - Superior (Pow Pow 7") Great JA style stepper from the Pow Pow crew out of Germany. Also a good cut by the Morgan Heritage. Michael Rose - Bingiman a come (Blakamix 10") Still listening to this one. Rough tune! Vibronics/Vitamin M/Splitz horns - Uprising (Scoops 10") Sometimes an instrumental gets overlooked because of a vocal on the other side. I recently picked out Murraymans 'Keep Jah Fire Burning' and found an instrumental I had barely listened to. A great piece of music from the Vibronics crew. August Queen Omega - Serve the king (Stingray 7") There came a few cuts to the Runaway slave rhythm (remake of Crazy Baldhead) a few months back. This cut totally blew me away. Queen Omegas vocals is firm and very rhytmic. Tuuuuune!!! Michael Rose - Bingiman a come (Blakamix 10") Michael Rose have released some great tunes the last couple of years. This already belongs to my favourites. Inspired vocal on a heavy stepper produced by Mixman. Admiral Tibet - Natural Vibes (Special delivery music 7") Another great set of tunes from the Special delivery crew on a rhythm called Storm alarm. Also a great cut by Gentleman called Rainy Days. Prezident Brown - Simple mathematics (Kariang 7") First Kariang release I bought in a long while. Good tune on a very nice melodic rhythm. Quality production. Prince Alla - Dem say tribal war is over (New born 7") Prince Allah is in fine form on this heavy one-drop. I really like the bassline, kind of meditative... July Viceroys - Bredren and sistren (CSA LP) Among the first LPs I ever bought. Both love and roots lyrics on heavy Radics backing, and, great great vocalists. Robbie Valentine - Jah is my defender (Blakamix LP) This excellent singer is in top form on this LP produced by Dennis Mixman. Pure roots in a showcase style and highly recommended. Ras Shiloh & Gentleman - Blessings from Jah (Digital B 7") Great combination on this new one drop from Digital B. Also great cut by Bushman. Go and buy! Morgan Heritage - Dont push we (Star trail 7") Great tune by MH on the new mineral rhythm. Several cuts on this rhythm but this and the Everton Blender piece are the ones liked the most. Meditations - Greatest hits (Greensleeves LP) Been into harmony groups this month. Not all tracks on this LP are great, but the ones who are... oooooh. 'Fly your natty dread', 'Rasta shall conquer' and especially 'Standing on the corner' is music of the highest order. June Rasites - Bundung (Charm 7") Great tune from the talented Ras Ites. One of best tunes from the their liveshow before Abyssinians in Stockholm last year. Earl 16 - True rastaman (Cultural Warriors 7") Has been on the shelves for a while now. I kind of rediscovered it when Earl sang it live at the sesison and realize now what a great tune it is. Alpha Rowen - The whipping (Reggae fever 7") Great roots production from switzerland inna yard style. Several cuts on this rhythm which is called Reverence, named after the Anthiny B cut which is also very good. Gentleman & Daddy Rings - River jordan (Black Scorpio 7") Good tune, solid rhythm. Jennifer Barrett - World Suffering (Addis 7") Swiss label Addis has released this BIG roots rhythm called King of the nile. Several great cuts where Jennifer Barett and Lutan Fyah is among the favourites. May Delroy Williams - I stand black (Message LP) Fine album with many good tunes. Produced by Augustus Pablo in the early 80´s. Sister Rasheda - I An I No Fear / Fly I Flag (Lioness 12") Great modern roots tunes produced and sung by Rasheda. Recorded at Musicworks JA. Beres Hammond - Preacher man (Startrail 7") Startrail is really the label I check for when I want modern roots JA style. Beres often release lovers styled tunes but this is a serious slice of roots music. Go and buy. Jah Mali - Give thanks and praises (Cali Bud 7") One of my favourite singers, Jah Mali, sings with great inspiration on this one. There is also cuts by Warrior King, Abijah and more but this is the most crucial. Lorenzo - No frighten me (Irie Ites 10") Great tune by this wicked singer. Also cuts by Ras McBean and Chezidek on the same record. April/May Johnny Osbourne - Truths and rights (Studio1 LP) The tragic news of the passing of Sir Coxsone Dodd, founder of Studio1 made me pick out some classic Studio 1 material. Truths and rights is one of my favourite Studio 1 LP´s. I never grow tired of it. Winston Francis - Lets go to zion (Studio1 7") Big big roots tune. Freddie McGregor - Bobby babylon (Studio1 LP) "Dont eat the bread of wickedness, stay away from the wine of violence" Featuring many soulful and beautiful tunes as well as the heavy roots piece Rastaman camp. Carlton and the shoes - Love me forever (Studio1 LP) Beautiful harmonies sometimes melancholic. One of my absolute favourite albums. Lloyd and Devon - Push push (Studio1 12") Great roots stepper. March Faithful/Culture Freeman - Straight up/King Davids style (Conscious Sounds 10") Two real STORMERS from the Bush Chemists. Up and coming DJ Faithful rides a fast stepper rhythm. Never heard this fellow before and I am stunned. Brilliant delivery! Freeman rides the rhythm previously used for Kenny Knots - Zion. Beautiful chords, great delivery. Dont confuse it with the less good King davids house, different tune. Lutan Fiyah - Birthright (Unity 7") Well what can say, I have already glorified '16 years', and this is equally good. Dont miss it, you will be sorry. Unity sound production. There is also cuts by Jah Mason and Jigalo. Bobby Blue - Tribal Warriors (Conscious Sounds 10") Great tune from the Bush Chemists. Johnny Osbourne - Babylon judgement day (Original Sounds 7") Heavy steppers tune. Rhythm is a remake of the classic Shaka/Ras Imru Asha tune Marshall. Also a next cut by Devon Russell entitled 'Israel'. Jah Mason - Rumours of war (Jah Warrior 7") Jah Mason keeps em coming. Good tune. February Murray Man - Keep the fire burning (Scoops 10") Vibesey one-drop from Vibronnics and Murray Man. Vibronics - Prophets/Fisherman (Scoops 7") King Shiloh used to run this tune as dubplate. Heavy! Gladiators - Trenchtown mix up (Virgin LP) Ultra classic roots album. African Brothers - We want some freedom (Easy star LP) Great album with this underrated vocal trio. Feat. Sugar Minott, Tony Tuff and Derrick Howard. Give 'A still tongue' an extra listen. Wicked!! Dub Judah - Babylon is a trap (Dub jockey LP) Classic UK roots. Soundsystem powerplay in my livingroom.... January 2004 Admiral Tibet - Valley of Division (Addis 7") Admiral Tibet rarely let you down. As strong as always on the crisp Frontline Rhythm. Mark Wonder - Misconception (Addis 7") Same rhythm as above. Chezidek tune on the flip. Both tunes are excellent. I´m just waiting for Mark Wonder to have a major breakthrough, its bound to happen... Don Carlos - Day to day living (Greensleeves LP) Classic roots album that I pick out every now and then. Ranking Diddy - Jah will never let I down (Dub Flash 12") Hard hard one drop from German producer Sir Larsie I. Wicked! Nice stepper on the other side as well. Junior Ross - Babylon fall (Tappa LP) One of my favourite albums alltime. I never grow tired of it. 70´s roots at its best. |
