Previous top five home selections 2003 | 2004 | 2005 | 2006 December Anthony Redrose - Legal assasin (Nuclear 7") Wicked roots tune that came a year or two back. Great rhythm but unfortunately no version. Turbulence - Poor mans cry (Organic 7") One of several great cuts on the question rhythm. Also a year or so old. Winston Reedy - Door peeper (Room in the sky 7") Great digital recut of the Spear classic. Also a good cut by Lidj Jahnoy called Peace and love. I-Natural - Roar like a lion (Unity 10") Raw roots inna Leeds style. Tough. Viceroys - Rise in the strength of Jah (Thompson 7") Pure killer roots. Came on repress not so long ago, heavily pitched though... November Earl Sixteen - Cant conquer we/Burn it (King Shiloh 12") Top tunes from Earl 16 sung on two steppers produced by Dub Creator. Each side features a vocal followed by two dubs. Both good, though my favourite being Burn it. A quality slice of roots on the herb topic. Melodies added on cut three with brilliant horn section. Go and buy. Joe Higgs & Ken Boothe - A message of old (Soul Jazz LP track) From the album Studio One Roots 2. All good tracks, but I been pulling back this particular tune as its absolutely wicked. If you have heard the expression reggae´s got soul you will know what I mean. This tune along with Sleeping Trees by The Saints struck me like lightning. Dennis Nolan - Why wicked man/Black revolution (Blakamix 10") Havent heard much from this singer apart froma a couple of sides on Mad Professors Ariwa label. Two tuff tunes produced by Mixman. Patrck Irie - Care for the children (Harmodio 7") Great modern roots from yard. Original rhythm with catchy horns and Patrick Irie singing about the importance of taking care of the kids. 'Like how the father protects you and I, so we must protect the little children...' Learoy Green - Fools policy (Dub Addict 12") Great stepper produced by Roots Massacre for french sound system Dub Addict. Vibes!! October Natty King - Dont worry we (Dream 7") Allthough I´m fed up with certain rhythms that has been used a thousand times, I gotta say this is crucial. A great relick of the classic Revolution rhythm aka Black Roses aka Rub a dub all the time. Natty King delivers firm and steady vocals. Uplifting. Delly Ranx - Row mister fisherman row (Champagne 7") Delly delivers the message in a singjay style over this JA stepper. Flipside has a different rhythm. Naphtali - Mental Slavery (Black legacy LP) 'New UK roots' which is not so new anymore. Naphtali has been one of my favourite singers ever since his Jah Warrior produced album were released (think it was 1997). This album is produced by Keety Roots and demonstrates a good example of that strict digital style that came from the UK in the early 90´s. Gotta hail Keety Roots for the excellent drumming. Militant... Double X - Take that gun off me (Tuff nut 7") Double X sings this anti-gun statement over an excellent rhytm. JA style roots.A next vocal on the flip, no version. Ras Hassen-Ti - Roots from the rocks (dreadlyon rec 10") The stronger of the two tunes on this 10" from french producer(s) Munky Lee. The rhythm is a nice stepper with an apparent live feel to it. This is the kind of tune that gets better for every listen. Forward Munky Lee!! September Prince Malachi - 1966 (Blakamix 7") Wicked wicked and crucial tune!!!!!!! One of the best if not the best tune from Prince M and also one of the best tunes ever from Blakamix. Cant tell you enough, you need this one. I got the one drop cut on 7", stepper cut available on 10". Murray Man - All the days (Mellow Vibes 7") Nice one drop sung and produced by Murray Man. Riddim is carrying that Mellow Vibes trademark. Fantan Mojah/Mr Flash - Rastafari is the ruler (Lion Vibes 7") Pure quality from Lion Vibes. Great tune. Dennis Brown - What about the half (DEB 10") Classic stepper selection on repress. This tune is beautiful and rough at the same time. Cant beat that. Morgan Heritage - Dem try everything (King of kings 7") Nice tune that came on the canadian King of kings label a few years back. Yard style one drop. Summer selection Capital Letters - Vineyard (Gulp LP) Every summer I always tend to pick out old uk roots stuff. I think its because of the slow and soft sound of old UK productions. It seems to go well with the hot weather. Even though this record is recorded in Germany, it still has the typical UK sound for this time (early 80´s). Ras Shiloh & Simpleman - People to be free (Reggae Vibes 7") Meditating for my people to be free.... Modern JA roots tune, rhythm same style as Cuss Cuss. Several cuts but this one got stuck in my head. Mark Wonder - We shall overcome (Addis 7") Suberb new rhythm called The Heat. Nice vocal. Jackie Edwards - Invasion (Attack 10") Superior cut to the the Spear tune. Not inpossible to find on Grounation 7" and easy to find on Attack 10" repress. Mikey General - Sound doctor (Fashion 12") Early Mikey General on the Tempo Rhythm. Be prepared for 80´s drum sounds. April Afrikan Simba - Impostor (Age of venus 7") Heavy tune produced by Jah Warrior. Simba surely can deliver the lyrics. First time I heard this tune was as dubplate played by Channel One(UK). Donicky - Gonna be free (Vineyard 7") Slow modern JA roots. Nice. Alpha Rowen - Murder (Ancient Mystic 7") Crisp onedrop rhythm called 'Hitman'. Several cuts but this one did it for me. Turbulence - Descilate (Ffrench 7") Great tune on the suberb Saga rhythm. Essential music!! Also a great cut by Luciano called 'It a fi stop'. Buy or regret... March Twinkle Brothers - Praise Jah (Virgin LP) Classic Twinke Brothers selection. Aswad - Finger gun style (CBS 7") Crucial Aswad tune á 1981. Hurricanes - You can run (Black Art 7") You can run you can run but you cannot hide, you can try.... Used to play the Dennis Halmilton cut on the sound, now this is doing the rounds at home. Various - Studio One Disco mix (Soul Jazz LP) Essential Studio 1 stuff. Need to have. Selah Collins - Hope (Studio 55 7") I have listed this tune in the home selection previously and its still running hot. One of the last years best tunes up there with I Wayne´s Living in love. CRUCIAL. February Ras Mac Bean - Sellasie I vision (Backyard Movements 10") Great vocal on a thumping stepper courtesy of Russ Disciple. Crisper than crisp rhythm with beatiful horns. Forward Russ!! Flipside features a nice Cristine Miller tune on the same rhythm. Go and buy! Prince Malachi - Behold (Falasha 12") Still running hot. Natty King - No giving up (Golden house 7") Nice vocal on the conscience rhythm. One drop JA style. Zion Train/Sis K - Power one (Deep Root 7") Beautiful UK roots. Lutan Fiyah - Beat round the bush (Conscious Sounds 10") Heavyweight tune for the steppers massive. Fast and powerful toasting. January 2005 Jr Dan - Wiseman (HiTry 10") Great slice of 70´s roots. Serious! Comes on a 10" alongside Jah foundation, a deeply spiritual instrumental/binghi styled tune. Prince Malachi - Behold (Falasha 12") One of the best tunes I´ve heard from the prince in a long time. Sung over an ultra-heavy b-line. Produced by Aba Shanti-I, one drop style. Selah Collins - Hope (Studio 55 7") I´ve had this quite a while a listen to it frequently still. Beautiful one drop from the Studio 55 crew. Don Carlos - The worlds most wanted (Little house 7") Very good roots tune. Havent heard much from Don Carlos the last few years, but this sounds promising. Also looking forward to hear more from the Little house label. Lee Van Cliff - Water gone (Thompson 7") Early 80´s styled toasting over the immortal 'Rise in the strength of Jah' (Viceroys) rhythm. |
