Previous top five home selections 2003 | 2004 | 2005 | 2006 April - July 2006 Barry Brown - Mouth a talk (Eek-A-Mouse 7") One in the series of crucial reissues on the Eek-a-mouse label. Wicked dub on the flip. Eek-A-Mouse - Wicked shall not reign (Eek-A-Mouse 7") Top notch material from the man called Eek-a-mouse. Much more melody and singing in this early Eek-A-Mouse material than his later releases on Greensleeves. This was before his "bide-bong" period. Also make sure to get 'In my fathers land' and 'Creation' on the same label. Johnny Osbourne - Black star liner (Roots garden 7") Nice uptempo one drop, produced by Manasseh. Brother Culture - Darker side of town (Roots Garden 7") Also Manasseh produced but on a different rhythm than the previous. Slow rhythm with good vocals by BC. Vibes. Louie Culture - Freeman boat (Digilab 7") Absolutely crucial yard roots. Many good cuts by artists like Alpha Rowen and Ras Shiloh. But if youre aiming for on only go for this one. Cant be without. No version though. Ras MacBean - The race (Backyard Movements 7") Updated cut of this old classic. Big big rhythm from the Disciples and crucial vocals from Bunny. Betters the original in my opinion. Also check the Ras MacBean cut, just as good. Both tunes ran as dubplates for Meditative Sounds last year. Tetrack - Lets get started (Message LP) Produced by the great Augustus Pablo. Classic Pablo rhythms with beatiful vocal harmonies on top. A classic and a must have. Tony Tuff - How Long? (Jah Shaka LP) Excellent LP that exactly suites my taste, both production and vocals are great. Some of the tunes you might have heard on Shaka sound.... like 'Jah is everything' and 'Messenger'. One of the stand out tracks is 'Clean living' and its pure killer, believe me. Musicians includes Flabba, Tony Asher and Skully. Get this one before its too late. Roger Robin - I see Jah (Jah Shaka LP) Out of the five LPīs recently released on Shakas inprint, this along with the Tony Tuff are by far my favourites. Roger Robin with his clean voice is sometimes reminicent of the great Garnett Silk. Excellent tunes, excellent production. Mafia and Fluxy rhythm section with Gussie P at the controls. The rhytm used for Shakaīs Roger Robin special - Shaka Shaka Warrior - is here used for Come now Jah. Must say I prefer the Shaka special but rhythm is still pure murder!!!! Play it out loud and you will get the message. Michael Prophet - Pressure we ah feel (Sip a cup 10") Nice stepper with great melodies. Micahel Prophet in fine style. Idren Natural - Farover/Letter from LIDJ (Blach Wheat Sounds 12") Idren Natural sings with great inspiration. 'Farover' is on a Munky Lee remake of the Kunta Kinte rhythm while 'A letter from LIDJ' is on London Calling. Dezzi D/Prince Malachi - The wicked cant enter/Which way (Vibeshouse 10") Nice tunes back to back on this new rhythm produced by Dezzi D. Slow and melodic. Fantan Mojah - Thanks and praise (Don Corleon 7") Nice yard roots on the Seasons rhythm. Luciano - Babylon go down (True definition 7") Nice one drop dating from 2005. Mykal Rose - Food (Our promotion 7") Nice melodies on this slow one drop. Original rhythm. March 2006 Jacob Miller - Tenement yard (Top ranking LP) Nice Miller LP with the absolutely crucial tracks 'Roman soldiers of babylon', 'Forward Jah Jah children' and 'Truth has come again'. Dr Alimantado - Best dressed chicken (Greensleeves LP) One of my best LPīs ever. Have listen to it since I started buying reggae and still are. A true classic that I never grow tired of. Mykal Rose - What can you do (Backyard movements 7") Nice moody tune. Rhythm courtesy of Disciples. Various - Studio One soul 2 (Soul Jazz LP) Not for the hardcore roots fans. Just beatiful music. Features 'People make the world go round' with Hortense Ellis which is KILLER!! Anthony B - Uprising (Soul Vybz 7") I am not a big fan of the moviestar rhythm, with a few exceptions and this is one of them. This recut takes it to a next level with nice horns and stuff. Also great cuts by Al Campbell and Chezidek February 2006 Joseph Hill (Culture) - Police man (Mister Tipsy 7") "..brought in this society to protect us, now they treatin us like dogs... police man where is the respect gone.." Tell them culture. Crucial vocal on a lethal one-drop with a a rub-a-dub styled b-line. The Mighty Threes - Rasta business (Education 12") One of them big money tunes now available on repress. Crucial 70īs stepper. Tenor Saw - Run from progress (Penthouse vintage 7") A slice of 80īs dancehall. Love sentiments but still with a rootsy vibe. Tune!! Collie Weed - Free your mind (Cultural Warriors 7") Excellent vocal on a Disciples rhythm track. Also a next cut by Murray man, equally crucial. Forward Cultural Warriors! Bagga Worries/Bongo Asha - 400 years/Solomons dream (Nomadix 10") Two excellent tracks from UKīs Nomadix. 400 years is a furious stepper suited for soundsystem powerplay while Solomons dream is a slower instrumental. January 2006 Anthony John - Creation (Jah Warrior 7") One of the best tunes to emerge from the JW label in a while. Wicked! Also a great cut by Lutan Fyah. Ras Echo - Long time (Silverfox 7") Wicked steppers tune from Jah Youth singer Ras Echo. Echo Ranks - Dreadlocks (Vibronics 10") Vibronics in fine style. Wicked horns. Perfectly suited for sound system powerplay. Levi Roots - Cool me off (Soundbox 12") Nice tune with horns part taken from jazz classic take five. Produced by Mafia and Fluxy and mixed by Gussie P. Vivian Jones - Jah works (Shaka LP) Picked out this old Shaka classic. All killer no filler. |
